Summary:
In the context of social security, the question of who is a self-employed worker (SEW) becomes relevant. The current definition is somebody who lacks a formal employer-employee relationship. More than 50% of Indian workers are involved in some form of self-employment, and the bulk of enterprises are run by a single person. SEWs need types of protection that are different from someone who has a regular employer.
